Throughout the book, I did have my share of annoyance with McEnery's unfounded hatred toward MacArthur and his undisguised bias against the Japanese. He read the foreign words with adequate accuracy as well, which as a nice bonus I was a little surprised how he handled the word "Hiei", for example, since I had definitely heard of audio book readers stumbling over it. #Rifleman the journey back series#Pausing and raising his volume at all the right places, he was as good at the reading as the author was writing it. A guide listing the titles AND air dates for episodes of the TV series The Rifleman. I had reviewed this title in its audio book format, and the reader, Robert Fass, did a wonderful job. Small problem, of course, and did not take away from his telling of the Pacific War. I felt that his (or Bill Sloan's) writing style did not always immediately illustrate that. He also supported his personal experiences with additional research in an attempt to expand his personal memoir into one of his company or even his regiment nice additions to be sure, but at times I did have to think about whether he was speaking of something he witnessed first personal, something he heard of second hand, or something he read about after the war. /rebates/2ftv2fThe-Rifleman-MkZBdlA5bUFBY0k92fThe-Journey-Back-KzJteENhcHFSR1dmTXBMNnp5cCtNQT09&. He told the stories openly with only little refrain, never hesitating when expressing his personal opinions against Douglas MacArthur, and retaining his racist personal hatred against the "Japs" and "Nips" on the other side of the line (I did not notice even once of him referring to the opposing side as "Japanese" or even "enemy" he always used derogatory racial slurs). Throughout the book, I could almost see him sitting in a comfortable chair with children around him, listening to his war stories at the family reunion. McEnery was for sure a great storyteller. Hell in the Pacific, published very recently in 2012, was the memoir of United States Marine Jim McEnery who saw combat at Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, and Peleliu during WW2. We are, too. Technology isn’t in and of itself a bad thing - but using a mix of methods might be the best match for how the human brain learns. “It is important to ensure that handwriting practice remains a central activity in early letter learning, regardless if this occurs with a stylus and tablet or traditional paper and pencil,” the researchers note in the paper. Some schools are replacing handwriting with typing, and the study’s authors don’t recommend that kind of singular approach. Rather, they make clear that teachers and instructors shouldn’t preference one method over all others. That’s not to say that the study’s authors advocate for banning tech tools in the classroom - after all, the study was performed with digital handwriting. And it’s important to note that both adult and kid brains delivered similar results. The researchers deduced this because writing and drawing activated areas of the brain that typing didn’t. The results of the study were clear: For the most effective learning and remembering, it was better for students to write or draw by hand versus typing out notes. The team recorded participants’ brain waves, taking note of which areas of the brain were activated at any given time. Researchers asked 12 adults and 12 seventh-graders to use cursive handwriting to take notes with a digital pen, and then to type the same notes out with a keyboard. Your brain isn’t forced to engage in the same way. When you type things out, you’re simply hitting keys on a keyboard. The implication is that if more of the brain is used, learning is more effective.Īccording to Science News for Students, taking notes longhand is more involved because it involves thinking about and producing the shape of each individual letter, retrieving memories of what the letters look like, controlling our hands when writing and watching the shape of each letter take form. But the study by Askvik’s group looks at whether taking notes using a pen uses more of the brain than typing notes out, specifically in 12-year-old children. Previous studies have made clear how the human brains learns - drawing letters and taking notes longhand is more effective than typing them out, according to an earlier Frontiers in Psychology report. This isn’t the first study to examine the effectiveness of handwriting vs. typing notes impact education outcomes? In a recent study published in Frontiers in Psychology, a research team led by Eva Ose Askvik at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology took a close look at optimal learning within a classroom setting, and specifically at the effectiveness of handwriting vs. Clearly, not having access to the technology needed to receive instruction would have a drastic impact on learning.īut if students did have access to the technology they needed, or this technology was included within the classroom experience, then is there still a difference between learning through different mediums? How does handwriting vs. Many outlets, including TechCrunch, reported inequitable access to the equipment, devices and broadband internet that allowed students to take advantage of remote learning. While technology eased some of the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, it also highlighted inequality. It’s hard to dispute that technology affects learning in myriad ways. typing notes? The influx of technology in the classroom has presented questions on how the human brain learns. Students, in turn, are more reliant on tablets and laptops for their learning, especially during the pandemic when students were receiving instruction virtually and asynchronously.īut there are questions around this kind of technology-based learning - specifically, does it impact students’ ability to learn and retain knowledge? Is there a difference in learning and retention when students use handwriting vs. This is certainly the case in classrooms, with teachers depending more and more on technology to deliver lessons and keep track of students’ progress. As modern technology becomes more ubiquitous and less expensive, we’re integrating it into every aspect of our daily lives. ![]() ![]() You can choose to wait it out and deal with the workload when you feel like it, but you’ll earn the bare minimum when you get around to it. Millimeter waves are affected by clouds, so getting good weather was important. The collaboration had made earlier observations with fewer telescopes, but 2017 was the first time they had a globe-spanning array that included the power of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in Chile with its 64 dishes. "Then the Earth turns so we can fill in the image." "You can think of them as silvered spots on a global mirror," says Shep Doeleman, the EHT's project leader at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The telescopes they used stretched from Hawaii to Arizona, Mexico to Spain, and Chile to the South Pole. So, the EHT team coopted most of the millimeter-wave telescopes worldwide and combined their data to produce a virtual telescope the size of Earth through a process called very-long-baseline interferometry. No existing telescope has the resolution to see such a distant, tiny object. Yet its event horizon is only 40 billion kilometers across-about four times the diameter of Neptune's orbit. The black hole at the center of M87, 55 million light-years away, has swallowed the mass of 6.5 billion suns. Black holes pack an immense amount of mass into a surprisingly small space. At that specific radio frequency, radiation can penetrate the haze of dust and gas that surrounds the centers of galaxies.īut zooming in on the black holes was still a challenge. The EHT team, from 13 institutions around the world, made its observations of M87* and the black hole at the center of our Milky Way, known as Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), over 5 nights in April 2017 using eight radio telescopes that are sensitive to wavelengths of about a millimeter. The observed shadow is essentially circular, Broderick says.ĭata from the South Pole Telescope, one of the radio dishes used in the Event Horizon Telescope, overwintered in Antarctica before being combined with other data. General relativity predicts that the shadow ought to be round to within 10%, says Avery Broderick, an EHT member and astrophysicist at the University of Waterloo in Canada, whereas alternative theories of gravity predict distorted, noncircular shapes. The black hole bends light around it, creating a circular shadow. In the team's images, the bottom of the ring appears bright because the gases there are being Doppler-boosted, whipped toward Earth. As they consume matter that strays too close, they squeeze it into a superheated disk of glowing gas. Black holes have gravitational fields so strong that even light cannot escape, so they are defined by the shell of a black, featureless sphere called an event horizon. "This is the end of space and time." Falcke says the 2-year process of crunching the data and generating the images "was the most emotionally difficult period of my life."Īlthough few doubted the existence of black holes, seeing them-or at least their shadow-was an immense challenge. "It feels like looking at the gates of hell," says Heino Falcke of Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, one of the leaders of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration, which announced the result in a global set of coordinated press conferences. It is also a feat for the team of more than 200 scientists who toiled for years to produce the image by combining signals from eight separate radio observatories spanning the globe. The result-a ring of fire surrounding the blackest of shadows-is a powerful confirmation of Albert Einstein's theory of gravity, or general relativity, which was used to predict black holes 80 years ago. Astronomers today revealed a picture of the gargantuan black hole at the heart of the nearby galaxy Messier 87 (M87). At last, we can see it: a black hole in the flesh. ![]() ![]() The current Facebook event photo size guidelines are: Selecting the correct Facebook event photo size and dimensions means the key parts of your image will be centered correctly without unexpected cropping and will display crisply on every device. He pitched the game to Electronic Arts, before instead securing an agreement with Accolade as a publisher, thanks to Reiche's former producer taking a job there. After releasing World Tour Golf, Reiche created an advertising mock-up for what would become Star Control, showing a dreadnaught and some ships fighting. #STAR CONTROL 2 ANDROSYNTH FOR FREE#Reiche had started his career working for Dungeons & Dragons publisher TSR, before developing PC games for Free Fall Associates. Star Control is the first collaboration between Paul Reiche III and Fred Ford. The mock-up image that Paul Reiche used to secure a publisher for the game. #STAR CONTROL 2 ANDROSYNTH CODE#As was typical of copy protection at the time, Star Control requested a special pass phrase that players found by using a three-ply code wheel, called "Professor Zorq's Instant Etiquette Analyzer". The game can be played by one player against the computer, or two players head to head. #STAR CONTROL 2 ANDROSYNTH MANUALS#Some background can be found in the manuals about two warring factions. The story framing the gameplay is minimal compared to the sequel, described mostly in the game's scenario introductions. There is a planet in the middle of the battlefield, providing a centre of gravity, which players can either crash into, or glide nearby to gain momentum. Players try to outgun and outmaneuver each other. ĭuring combat, the screen frames the action between the two ships with an overhead view, zooming in as they approach each other. This ties into the strategic meta-game between combat, where the crew can be replenished at colonies. Ships have a limited amount of crew, representing the total damage a ship can take before being destroyed. Both actions consume the ship's battery, which recharges automatically (with few exceptions). Ships typically have a unique firing attack, as well as some kind of secondary ability. There are 14 different ships, with unique abilities for each. Match-ups between these ships have a major influence over combat. The game offers different ships to pilot, which are deliberately imbalanced in ability. When two rival ships meet on the battlefield, an arcade-style combat sequence begins. The goal is to move your ships across the galaxy, claim planets along the way, and finally destroy your opponent’s star base. These colonies provide resources to the player's ships, such as currency and crew. The player has up to three ship actions per turn, which are used to explore new stars and colonize or fortify worlds. #STAR CONTROL 2 ANDROSYNTH FULL#The full game allows players to select one of 15 different scenarios, with opposing fleets arranged on a rotating star map. Players have the option to play the full game with the turn-based campaign, or to practice the one-on-one ship battles. The ship combat is based on the classic game Spacewar!, while the turn-based strategy is inspired by Paul Reiche III's 1983 game Archon. Star Control is a combination of a strategy game and real-time one-on-one ship combat game. Two sequels were released, Star Control II in 1992 (and the free open-source remake The Ur-Quan Masters in 2002), and Star Control 3 in 1996. The game was a commercial and critical success, and is remembered as one of the best games of all time, as well as the foundation for the highly praised sequel. It was originally released for Amiga and MS-DOS in 1990, followed by ports for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum in 1991. Star Control: Famous Battles of the Ur-Quan Conflict, Volume IV or just simply Star Control is a science fiction video game developed by Toys for Bob and published by Accolade in 1990.
